Anchorman Director Teams Up With Jennifer Lawrence For New Comedy With A Great Hook
20th Century Fox has a genuine miss on its hands with Walking With Dinosaurs. The $85 million animated film earned just $7.3m on its first weekend, with little hope that it will grow much over the holiday. The reviews are terrible and Frozen just can't be stopped. Fox is only on the hook for distribution as the film was independently financed, but someone somewhere is on the hook for that budget. Of course, I don't say to play "doom-sayer" and watch it open with $6m and end up with $60m ala Mouse Hunt back in 1997 on this very weekend. But Gore Verbinski's Mouse Hunt is one of the greatest movies ever made (slight exaggeration), so let's just hope for the best and see how this plays out. Charlotte's Web debuted with $11m over this weekend in 2006 and ended with $82m (I'm telling you, this weekend is magical), so all hope is not lost. And don't discount Fox's international muscle.
The news has hit that there is a Dumb and Dumber sequel in the works. Fans of the original 1994 movie should hold on to their hats because it appears that Jim Carrey will be reprising his role as Lloyd Christmas in the ridiculously bad-taste comedy about two stupid friends who bumble their way through life with great big dopey smiles on their faces.
Ron Burgundy, Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind have now hit the eighties and things are a little different. The legendary San Diego news anchors are now embarking on a different project, as part of a 24 hour news channel, but now they have fresh competition in the form of a young, handsome and well-dressed fellow anchor. Ron continues to put himself in sticky situations, this time involving some awkward racism with his new girlfriend's family during a social occasion among many other things. Will their antics extend beyond their previous capers involving angry bears and mean bikers Or will the eighties bring with it a more streetwise news bunch We doubt the latter. The sequel to 2004's 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy' is set to hit our screens soon entitled 'Anchorman: The Legend Continues'. We'll likely be seeing yet more hijinks from one of Hollywood's favourite comedy casts as they return following at massive $85 million gross from the original movie. Produced again by Judd Apatow ('The 40 Year Old Virgin', 'Knocked Up', 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'), Adam McKay ('Step Brothers', 'The Other Guys', 'Talladega Nights') also makes a return as director and co-writer alongside Will Ferrell. It is scheduled for release in the UK on December 20th 2013.
This week's big global release is the DreamWorks animated prehistoric comedy-adventure The Croods, led by an all-star vocal cast including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds. Look for a huge push for must-have spin-off merchandise for this one, as it's packed with cuddly creatures. And hope it does well at the box office, because it would make a great franchise too.
The name 'Judd Appatow' probably rings a bell, but without clear recognition of who he is. We guarrantee that he's partly responsible for one of your favourite contemporary comedy movies, having been involved as either a director, writer or producer for The Cable Guy, Anchor Man, Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pineapple Express, Don't Mess With the Zohan and Bridesmaids. To name but a few. It's safe to say, this man knows comedy. Which is why it is actually news worthy for him to say that Jim Carrey is the funniest man on the earth, because it kind of means that we have to consider whether Jim Carrey might actually be the funniest man on earth... 153554b96e
